Pray for Your Enemies

"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." - Matthew 5: 43-45

Today, when I was driving home from a surf contest, the Holy Spirit revealed to me what this verse meant. Of course when we are with someone who shows us love, we find no difficulty in showing them love. However it is the one who puts us down, talks about us behind our backs or insults us, we have the decision whether to be of God or of the enemy. Responding in anger is not of God, because God is love.

During lunch, as I was talking to a friend of mine, he said something, almost as if he was mocking me. Thinking about it after, I was pretty upset. But again, the Holy Spirit revealed something to me. God wants to envelope the world with His love. This is one reason why Jesus came down from heaven and lived on this Earth; to show how much God loves us.Paul talks about how our battle is not of the flesh but of the spiritual darkness. If I was to react negatively and lash out, Gods love would no longer has its rightful purpose there. My anger would almost pushed aside the good to welcome in the evil. But when we realize that is in our control and we decide to respond in love, God becomes more and more visible, as the darkness fades away. This is the hope for the world!
